It'd seem DC's relaunching a number of comic book series in this New 52 event, Detective Comics being one of them, in order to give every DC superhero/heroine a new, more enticing look, or so I've heard.
The first issue of the relaunched Detective Comics presents the World's Greatest Detective tracking down an old-time foe, the criminally insane Joker, in an attempt to solve a grisly string of murders. Catching him red-handed in the act of ripping the trachea out of his next victim, only to have him slipped through his fingers, Batman subsequently found himself surrounded by Gotham's police squad, whose combined deductive capacity somehow allowed them to track down Batman instead of the Joker as well as delayed any observation of would-be casualties which took the innocent form of a little girl on the scene.
From the words of said little girl, Batman took off yet again to the Joker's purported apartment, to where Gotham's police force were taken as well in their attempt to display that they were trying to do their duties, which resulted in their being blown sky high by a Joker decoy. Batman, safely away witnessing the explosion, noticed in the midst of the crowd a figure retreating to the train as opposed to the rest leaning on their rubbernecking tendencies. 'twas the Joker who greeted Batman with an attempt to kill, only to be subdued by the latter and placed within the confines of a cell all wrapped up. It was only moments after the Joker regained vague consciousness that he was visited upon by a stranger whom he addressed as Dollmaker.
The last scene showed the Joker's face literally peeled out by the Dollmaker.

To the incurable masochist, this certainly wouldn't come as much of a bother, especially the Joker. A lot of gore to behold, letting on as little as possible, rendering it futile to reason the Joker's capricious intentions. To quote the Batman, 'Maybe only a mad person can know what goes on in there.'
